emsCharts Outcome Change

Changes to Billable Refusals & Outcomes

For billing purposes, we now have two options for billing refusals on the back-end: An ALS refusal and a BLS refusal. For sign-offs, when selecting the OUTCOME in your chart, please continue to make a determination on whether you feel it should be billable or not. This may be subject to change at the discretion of the Billing QA Auditors and/or the Billing Department.
As a reminder, you should never promise or guarantee that there will not be a bill for our services.

Billable Refusal

  • Patient has a notable complaint but refuses transport
  • A legitimate mechanism of injury exists creating the potential for serious injury
  • A concerning underlying medical problem exists creating the potential for serious illness if not evaluated in the very near future
  • We provide a hands-on treatment (e.g. ECG, 12-lead, BG check, cold pack, splint, dressing, etc.)
  • The patient themselves called EMS/911 and requested assessment (especially in conjunction with any of the above)

NEW: If the call was dispatched as a P1, P2 or P3 and is billable, the outcome should be Patient Treated/Evaluated and Refused ALS. An addendum must be added to the chart by a paramedic in the event the BLS EMT is the primary caregiver listed on the chart.

If the call was dispatched as P4 and is billable, the outcome may be Patient Treated/Evaluated and Refused BLS but could be upgraded to ALS if warranted.

Non-Billable Refusal

Continue to use the "Patient Treated/Evaluated and/or Refused Evaluation/Transport" if the patient refuses all care and for most lift assists.
